’28 Pages’ Released: Once-Classified Section of 9/11 Report Made Public; Saudi FM Al-Jubeir Says Matter Now ‘Finished’

The U.S. Congress on Friday released a long-classified section of the official report on the Sept. 11 attacks that described potential potential links between some of the hijackers and officials in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said on Friday he welcomed the release of this “28 pages” of the official report.

“The matter is now finished,” Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told a news conference in Washington, adding that the report “absolutely” exonerated Saudi Arabia.

The report said the alleged links had not been independently verified. As the New York Times reports, subsequent investigations into the terror attacks “pursued the leads described in the document and found that many had no basis in fact. But the mythology surrounding the document grew with each year it remained classified.”

Last week, Director of the CIA John Brennan said that Saudi Arabia is “among our closest counterterrorism partners” at an event at the Brookings Institution.

According to a report in Reuters, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said its agreement to the release “is not an indication that the intelligence community agrees with the pages’ accuracy or concurs with the information it contains.”
