Saudi Launches USD83.2 Million Financial Initiative To Bolster Research Laboratories

Mixed Signals in the Latest Saudi Labor Market Report
At face value, the Saudi labor market report released March 28 contained good news. The report showed that the overall unemployment rate (covering nationals and non-nationals) fell to 4.4% in the fourth quarter of 2023 from 5.1% in the third quarter. The unemployment rate for Saudi nationals dropped to 7.7% from 8.6% in the third quarter (and 8% in the fourth quarter of 2022), with the unemployment rate for Saudi women declining particularly sharply to 13.7% (down from 16.3% in the third quarter of 2023 and 15.4% in the fourth quarter of 2022). The unemployment rate for Saudi men remained unchanged at 4.6% between the third and fourth quarters of 2023, still above the 4.2% rate in the fourth quarter of 2022. The overall unemployment rates for Saudi women and all Saudis are at their lowest levels since the kingdom began collecting statistics.

Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (HKSTP) and Cyberport each signed memorandums of understanding with Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology in Riyadh on Monday, a year after Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu attended the Leap technology conference to foster closer ties between the two markets. The third annual Leap event is the first to feature a Hong Kong pavilion, where HKSTP and Cyberport had eight and seven companies exhibiting, respectively.

Yellen, Saudi finance minister discuss economy, collaboration at G20 meeting
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen met with Saudi Arabia’s finance minister Mohammed al-Jadaan at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a statement released by US Department of treasury on Thursday reported. Yellen and the Saudi minister discussed economic prospects of the Kingdom, the advancements made in its reform initiatives and its involvement in global and regional affairs, the statement added.

Developing clean hydrogen industries and markets are strategically crucial for Saudi Arabia and China to achieve their net-zero climate goals. Saudi Arabia has made significant progress in hydrogen development from extraction to commercialization. Different options for galvanizing clean hydrogen production are being explored, with the goal of reaching four million tons of clean hydrogen annually by 2030, most of which will be exported to major energy consumers in East Asia and Europe. China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of hydrogen. The construction of an integrated hydrogen industry by 2035 will promote the use of hydrogen across the transportation, energy storage, and industrial sectors.

U.S. collaborates with allies, partners at Saudi-led Spears of Victory exercise
Ninth Air Force (Air Forces Central)’s KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft and experts across the fields of command and control, security forces, and other critical operations deployed to the Royal Saudi Air Force’s Spears of Victory exercise Feb. 4-15, at King Abdulaziz Air Base. Spears of Victory includes eight countries and is one of the largest multinational exercises hosted by a U.S. partner in the region. The exercise provides opportunities to develop tactical proficiency, improve interoperability, strengthen military relationships and increase flexibility to address existing and emerging threats. The multilateral exercise builds confidence by familiarizing operators with a wide array of aircraft in various contingency scenarios.
