Saudi Prince Alwaleed Joins Twitter

HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal has joined Twitter, the microblogging social network in which the Prince holds a 3% stake.
In an announcement in both Arabic and English on his official handle, @Alwaleed_Talal, Alwaleed’s office noted that the businessman will soon be active on Twitter:

Alwaleed is the second Saudi royal to join Twitter this year, after Crown Prince Salman joined in February. Salman received over 200,000 followers in just a few days with a single tweet.

Like Crown Prince Salman, Alwaleed’s profile has already been “verified,” which is designated by a blue check mark next to the user’s name. Administrators at Twitter choose the most followed users to be verified so as to distinguish them from impostors.

Alwaleed purchased a stake in Twitter for $300 million in 2011.

Prince Alwaleed’s Kingdom Holding Co., based in Jeddah, is a diversified investment group. The international-travelling Prince and Kingdom Holding, Co. developed the iconic Kingdom Tower in Riyadh, now the Kingdom’s second tallest building. Alwaleed is seeking to develop the new world’s tallest building, named the Kingdom Tower Jeddah, by 2015.

Although that project has been delayed since it was announced and required six years of planning, the building is now set to change the landscape of Jeddah forever with construction starting on April 1st, 2013:

“The long-heralded plans are ambitious to say the least: not only does the developer Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), headed by Saudi’s Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal, plan to build the world’s first tower that tops 1km in height but the 500,000 square metre project is also the centrepiece of a plan to build a 5.2 square kilometre entirely new Kingdom City city centre along the Red Sea coast,” the National reports today.

Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz join Twitter in February.
