Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke today with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman by phone to discuss several regional issues, according to a statement released by the State Department.
Secretary Pompeo “thanked the Crown Prince for Saudi Arabia’s support for northeast Syria’s urgent stabilization needs, its engagement with the Iraqi government, and its offer to help Iraq address its water and electricity shortages by sending desalination vessels and providing diesel for offline generators,” according to the statement.
The Secretary and the Crown Prince also “discussed their support for a ceasefire in Afghanistan over the coming Eid, and peace in Afghanistan more broadly. They also reviewed the UN Special Envoy’s work to resolve the conflict in Yemen and other topics of mutual interest,” the statement said.
Secretary Pompeo last visited Saudi Arabia in late April, where he met with King Salman, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Prince Khalid bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the U.S., and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.
