Saudi Arabia is reportedly eying a new oil port to be built in Yemen’s southeast al-Mahra governorate, near Oman, where Saudi-led coalition troops are present, the energy-focused website oilprice.com reports.
Saudi Arabia-based marine construction company Huta Marine has sent a letter to the Saudi ambassador to Yemen in which it thanks the official for the opportunity to submit a technical and financial proposal for the future oil port, according to the report, which is based on a letter obtained by Al Jazeera.
The al-Mahra governorate borders Oman, and the border crossing, as well as the seaport and airport in the governorate, is under the control of the Saudi and UAE coalition. Yemen last month resumed oil exports.
Last month, Saudi Arabia briefly suspended oil shipments through the Red Sea’s Bab al-Mandeb strait, one of the world’s most important tanker routes, following an attack on a tanker by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
