The Iranian government has proposed to Saudi Arabia three locations for a meeting of foreign ministers, according to Iran’s foreign minister, as the two countries move forward with re-establishing ties.
According to VOA, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told a news conference in Tehran his country had agreed to such a meeting, but did not list the three locations or say when such a meeting might take place.
Meanwhile, Iran says Saudi Arabia has invited Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi for an official visit to Saudi Arabia, according to several reports.
The invitation is said to have come in a letter from King Salman, but Saudi Arabia has not yet confirmed the invitation was sent.
Iran “welcomed the invitation,” a political deputy at the president’s office said on Twitter.
Iran and Saudi Arabia have long been regional adversaries. The two nations surprised many around the world with news of a plan to re-establish ties announced by China, which played host to the talks.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed optimism about the re-establishment of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
“If this agreement actually bears out, and particularly if Iran follows through on the commitments that it’s apparently made, again, that would be positive,” Blinken said during a news conference at Addis Ababa University during a visit to Ethiopia.
