President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, met with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman yesterday in Riyadh, the first visit by Kushner since the killing of Jamal Khashoggi.
“Building on previous conversations, they discussed increasing cooperation between the United States and Saudi Arabia, and the Trump Administration’s efforts to facilitate peace between the Israelis and Palestinians,” a readout posted by the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia stated.
“Additionally, they discussed ways to improve the condition of the entire region through economic investment.”
The meeting comes amid a low point in U.S.-Saudi relations as Congress continues to turn up the pressure on the Trump administration in the wake of the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, frustration over the Saudi-led war in Yemen, and “bipartisan frustration over how the White House has so far ignored a 120-day deadline for a report on Khashoggi’s killing requested by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.”
