Official symbol for Saudi Riyal introduced

The symbol, which blends Arabic calligraphy with the name of the national currency, “riyal,” will be utilized in financial and commercial transactions both within the Kingdom and internationally.

On the occasion of Saudi Founding Day celebrations and the approval of King Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) has launched a new symbol for the Saudi Riyal in an effort to reinforce the currency’s identity locally, regionally, and internationally.

According to a SAMA press release:

“This initiative aims to promote Saudi Arabia’s financial identity, locally, regionally, and internationally. It reinforces national identity and cultural belonging, highlights the role of the national currency, and showcases the Kingdom among major global economies and G20 members.

The Saudi riyal symbol, developed to the highest technical standards, embodies the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage, carrying the name of our national currency “Riyal” in a design derived from Arabic calligraphy. The symbol will streamline the representation of the Saudi riyal in local, regional, and international contexts, making it suitable for use in referring to the Saudi riyal in all financial and commercial transactions.”

SAMA Governor Ayman Al-Sayari confirmed implementation of the new symbol will be gradual for financial and commercial transactions, with coordination across all relevant entities. He acknowledged the collaboration between SAMA, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Media, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization in the development of this Riyal symbol.
