The National Water Company of Saudi Arabia signed a $587 million deal to supply water to the planned Kingdom Tower Jeddah complex, Bloomberg reports citing the Saudi Press Agency.
The “25-year agreement to supply 156,000 cubic meters of treated and drinking water a day, enough for 62 Olympic-size pools, was signed by the chief executive of the Jeddah-based developer, Waleed Batraji, and Loay al-Musallam, head of National Water Co.,” according to Bloomberg.
Saudi Arabia’s leaders are placing a high importance on the Kingdom’s water challenges as it rushes to provide sustainable potable water to its booming population and economic growth. Saudi Arabia receives only 4 inches of rainwater a year and has limited underground and other reserves, accelerating the need for more, sustainable water sources.
There are 30 desalination plants in the country.
