  • Saudi Arabia: E-Visa for Tourism Expanded to Certain UK, US, EU and Schengen Visa Holders and Permanent Residents

    Effective immediately, the Ministry of Tourism expanded the eligibility for e-visas for tourism to individuals holding a valid business or tourist visa issued by the United Kingdom, United States, or Schengen Area countries; permanent residents of the United Kingdom, United States or European Union; and their first-degree relatives. Previously, these individuals could only obtain a visa-on-arrival.

  • Chinese EVs have yet to succeed in Europe. The Middle East could be different

    Despite their ambitious plans, Chinese EV makers yet to achieve the level of success they had hoped for in Europe. In 2022, BYD held a mere 0.3% market share across 14 major European markets, while Xpeng and Nio, which both entered Europe in 2021, each accounted for 0.1% of the region, according to auto data tracking site EU-EVs. Western carmakers continue to dominate the market, with Tesla enjoying a 15% share, Volkswagen with 11.3%, and BMW with 6.2%. It’s too soon to say if China’s ambitious EV makers will ever establish a strong foothold in Europe, but the early tepid performance is driving them to hedge their bets. They are setting their sights on a region halfway between Europe and China — the Middle East.

  • Europeans plan to keep ballistic missile sanctions on Iran

    European diplomats have told Iran they plan to retain European Union ballistic missile sanctions set to expire in October under the defunct 2015 Iran nuclear deal, four sources said, a step that could provoke Iranian retaliation. The sources cited three reasons for keeping the sanctions: Russia's use of Iranian drones against Ukraine; the possibility Iran might transfer ballistic missiles to Russia; and depriving Iran of the nuclear deal's benefits given Tehran has violated the accord, albeit only after the United States did so first.

  • Tri-nation Gas Swap Agreement Could Transform Europe’s Energy Market

    The volume of gas being transited between Turkmenistan, Iran, and Azerbaijan under a groundbreaking three-way swap agreement signed in late 2021 is expected to grow by 70 percent this year according to Majid Chegeni, the head of Iran's national gas company, NIGC. Chegeni did not mention the volume of gas he expected to be transited to Turkmenistan this year but the original agreement allowed for between 1.5 and 2 billion cubic meters a year, a volume which numerous subsequent reports said would quickly be increased.

  • Jamjoom Pharmaceuticals Soars in Debut After Saudi Arabia’s Biggest IPO of 2023

    Jamjoom Pharmaceuticals Factory Co. rose by the maximum allowed in its trading debut after the generic drugmaker pulled off the largest initial public offering in Saudi Arabia this year. The stock gained as much as 30% by 10:10 a.m. in Riyadh. In May, the company’s owners raised 1.26 billion riyals ($336 million) after the shares were priced at the top end of the range at 60 riyals each. The listing, the largest in the kingdom since Saudi Aramco Base Oil Co. raised $1.3 billion in December, has served as a gauge of investor appetite as Saudi Arabia’s IPO market slowly comes back to life.

The call came in a joint statement issued by the consulates general of Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, the UK, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland and the Office of the European Union Representative to the West Bank and Gaza.
