The Houthis now control much of western Yemen, including the country’s second biggest port, military bases and the airport in the capital, and a weapons depot in Amran, north of Sanaa. They have seized the presidential guard, anti-terrorism forces equipped by the U.S. to fight al-Qaida militants, and brigades armed with tanks and Russian-made Scud rocket systems. In a speech broadcast Tuesday, al-Houthi remained defiant. Wearing traditional Yemeni clothes, with a curved dagger tucked into his waistband, he said he had no plans to relinquish control of the government and warned Western countries — specifically the U.S., France, and Britain — against meddling in Yemen’s affairs.
