The Department of Energy plans to announce Tuesday that scientists have been able for the first time to produce a fusion reaction that creates a net energy gain — a major milestone in the decades-long, multibillion-dollar quest to develop a technology that provides unlimited, cheap, clean power. The aim of fusion research is to replicate the nuclear reaction through which energy is created on the sun. It is a “holy grail” of carbon-free power that scientists have been chasing since the 1950s. It is still at least a decade — maybe decades — away from commercial use, but the latest development is likely to be touted by the Biden administration as an affirmation of a massive investment by the government over the years.

Saudi Arabia to build giant solar power plant
The Saudi energy company ACWA Power and the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund will develop and build a 2,060 megawatt solar photovoltaic plant in western Saudi Arabia. ACWA Power and the sovereign wealth fund each own a 50% stake in the project. The plant is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2025, ACWA Power said in a press release.

It is not all sunshine: Middle East invests big in wind power
While not as consistent as north-west Europe, there are excellent wind resources in the MENA region. Southern Morocco, the areas around the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba in Egypt, Jordan and north-west Saudi Arabia, southern Egypt, and the south-east coast of Oman are all very windy. Parts of Libya, southern Tunisia, the Algerian Sahara, inland Iran and Kuwait also have strong winds. In contrast to much of Europe, the region has wide-open spaces where wind farms are not blocked by community opposition.
