  • Thales aims to double presence in Saudi Arabia, focus on defense and cybersecurity: CEO 

    French defense technology firm Thales aims to expand its presence in Saudi Arabia, propelled by the “massive” investments and opportunities in the nation, according to a top executive.  Speaking to Arab News on the sidelines of the World Defense Show, the company’s chairman and CEO, Patrice Caine, expressed the firm’s aspirations to expand its existing defense presence in Saudi Arabia, particularly in fields such as cybersecurity.  He said: “In addition to our defense activity, we will reinforce our cybersecurity field.” 

  • Samsung, Siemens and GE among global project developers in race for Saudi power plants

    Siemens, Samsung and ACWA Power are among 21 global utility project firms to prequalify for the development of four power plants across Saudi Arabia. In a statement, Saudi Power Procurement Co. also revealed French-owned EDF, Kepco from Korea, and Japan’s Marubeni were in contention for the contracts, as well as TAQA from the UAE and US-based GE. These projects are Rumah-1 and Rumah-2 in the Central region and Nairyah-1 and Nairyah-2 in the Eastern region, with a capacity of 1,800 megawatts per plant. According to SPPC, the plants will operate using natural gas combined cycle technology, incorporating provisions for carbon capture unit readiness. Additionally, these projects align with the Saudi Green Initiative, aiming to attain net-zero greenhouse gases through a circular carbon economy approach by 2060.

    A Saudi Patriot battery shot down six Houthi ballistic missiles in 48 sec. in a dramatic illustration of the rapid advancements the country's armed forces have made. The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) 290th Patriot unit was protecting the city of Jazan near the Yemeni border on Aug. 26, 2019, when Houthis fired a swarm of ballistic missiles that threatened civilian areas. In an engagement which has now become legendary within the service, according to officials, battery commanders launched an undisclosed number of Patriots to intercept the incoming missiles, with one missile being launched every six seconds.

    Saudi Arabia may be willing to accept a non-binding commitment from Israel to create a Palestinian state in its push to get a defense pact with the United States ahead of the 2024 presidential election.  Saudi Arabia had been heading toward normalizing relations with Israel and recognizing the country for the first time thanks to U.S.-led diplomacy. But those efforts were shelved in October after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, and Israel’s subsequent counter-offensive that enraged the Arab world.

    Airbus SE said it’s in talks to sell Saudi Arabia more A330 tanker military planes as the nation looks to boost its air force capabilities. The country is also considering purchasing the A400M military transport aircraft, according to Jean-Brice Dumont, head of Air Power at Airbus. “We know there is an interest in the A400M, and we will address it with the Saudi Air Force and the Ministry of Defense,” Dumont said in an interview on the sidelines of the World Defense Show that is taking place in Riyadh.

  • Backs to the wall, Gazans fear Israeli assault on last refuge

    Israeli forces shelled the outskirts of the last refuge on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip on Friday, where the displaced, penned against the border fence in their hundreds of thousands, said they feared a new assault with nowhere left to flee. More than half of Gaza's 2.3 million residents are now homeless and crammed into Rafah. Tens of thousands more have arrived in recent days, carrying belongings in their arms and pulling children on carts, since Israeli forces launched one of the biggest assaults of the war last week to capture Khan Younis, the main southern city, just to the north of Rafah.

    Saudi Arabia would be willing to accept a political commitment from Israel to create a Palestinian state, rather than anything more binding, in a bid to get a defence pact with Washington approved before the U.S. presidential election, three sources said. Months of U.S.-led diplomacy to get Saudi Arabia to normalise relations with Israel and recognise the country for the first time were shelved by Riyadh in October in the face of mounting Arab anger over the war in Gaza.

  • Exxon, Chevron Surpass Forecasts as Shale Drilling Lifts Output

    Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp. surpassed earnings forecasts as bigger-than-expected oil output from shale fields helped cushion the blow from weakening crude prices. Exxon rose more than 2% and Chevron climbed 1.9% in pre-market stock trading. Exxon’s outsized result also was aided by a $1.14 billion boost from unsettled derivatives and record fuel production at its refineries. Chevron, meanwhile, posted adjusted earnings of $3.45 a share that exceeded the Bloomberg Consensus estimate by 23 cents. The oil explorer also raised its dividend by a higher-than-forecast 8%.
