The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Brazil's president and the Turkish Prime Minister arrived in Brisbane overnight ahead of the G20 leaders summit.
The situation is more complex than a simple Shiite-Sunni divide. Earlier this week, the U.S. imposed sanctions on former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who lost power in 2012, during Yemen’s version of the Arab Spring. The Treasury Department accused Saleh of supporting the Houthis, whose leaders it also sanctioned. Not only are the U.S. and Saudi Arabia troubled by what the rise of a Shiite-dominated, Iran-backed force in Yemen portends, so is al-Qaida, which has already escalated its attacks in Yemen. Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has declared war on the Shiite rebels and has launched suicide missions in Sanaa, while at the same time attempting to kill U.S. diplomats.
In a long-awaited report, the committee said that "the various incidents which might have occurred are not suited to compromise the integrity of the FIFA World Cup 2018/2022 bidding process as a whole." The report criticised England's bid for the 2018 tournament for "inappropriate requests" from former CONCACAF president Jack Warner, a FIFA powerbroker at the time, in what it said was "an apparent violation of bidding rules". Gunmen have attacked an Egyptian navy ship in the Mediterranean Sea, state media say, leaving five servicemen injured and eight more missing at sea. In two further attacks in northern Sinai, militants killed five policemen and soldiers, officials said.
Netanyahu has no real challenger from the left, but plenty from the right. Early this week, Danny Danon announced his intentions to run against Bibi in the Likud primaries, essentially claiming that Bibi is too dovish. He specifically claims that the Prime Minister has “lost the way.” Bibi also has to worry about challenges from Lieberman and Bennett, both former allies who seem to think they could better handle Iran, the Palestinians, and the U.S.
Our tradition brings us together as a nation and is an essential part of our national identity. However, it should not be applied in a way that eliminates our individuality, which in turn suffocates creativity and self-expression.
The landmark agreement, jointly announced here by President Obama and President Xi Jinping, includes new targets for carbon emissions reductions by the United States and a first-ever commitment by China to stop its emissions from growing by 2030.
The U.S. military is updating plans to potentially evacuate U.S. Embassy personnel from Yemen in the wake of rising violence and uncertainty about the security situation in that country, CNN has learned. Any military involvement in an evacuation would come only after the U.S. ambassador requests help, something which has not yet happened. However, this week, defense and State Department officials confirmed there have been a series of conversations between the Pentagon and State Department about how long U.S. diplomats can safely stay in Yemen.
The sharpest drop in oil prices since 2008, coupled with a surge in the dollar, are testing the resolve of energy-producing nations to defend their currency pegs.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has disqualified Morocco from competing in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco had been due to host the 2015 tournament but raised fears over the spread of the Ebola virus and asked for the event to be postponed. CAF has always insisted the cup should still take place from January 17-February 8 and has now disqualified Morocco from taking part.
