Saudi Arabia to celebrate Founding Day on February 22

On February 22 Saudi Arabia celebrates Founding Day which commemorates Mohammed Bin Saud’s ascension to leadership of the central Arabian town of Diriyah in 1727.

The second Saudi Founding Day will be an official holiday on Wednesday February 22.  Public sector employees and students will enjoy a long weekend with Thursday, February 23 also off.

Founding Day was first celebrated in 2022 and, as per a royal decree, it has become an annual public holiday. The history of “Founding Day” goes back three centuries to when the first Saudi state was established in 1727 during the leadership of Imam Muhammad bin Saud.

A wide array of events will be held across Saudi Arabia including musicals, historical marches, seminars and cultural events.

“It’s a proud moment for Saudis, and we look forward to celebrating our national day together,” said Alanoud Albakr, a Saudi who lives in Riyadh. “I will visit Diriyah, the birthplace of the kingdom, with my mum and sisters then head to the Bujairi Terrace for dinner afterwards.”
