Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power is set to build a sizable 1.5 GW wind energy plant in Uzbekistan, signing power purchase agreements and investment agreements to build the Kungrad wind farm in Karakalpakstan—previously known as the Karakalpakstan Wind IPP.
According to a report in Fast Company, the wind farm will consist of three 500 MW wind power projects controlled by three subsidiaries: ACWA Power Kungrad Winds 1, 2, and 3.
Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and Uzbekistan have been cooperating on renewable energy initiatives since 2017, signing a number of agreements over the previous 5 years to develop renewable projects in the country also interested in diversifying its energy mix.
ACWA Power is a leading developer, investor, and operator of power and water assets in the Middle East and North Africa region. ACWA Power is also in the process of developing projects in Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, and locally in Saudi Arabia.
In addition to the three wind farm installations, a 100 MW battery energy storage system will be incorporated into the projects. The wind farm is projected to have an investment value of $2.4 billion and is currently thought to be the largest single-site wind farm in Central Asia and one of its kind worldwide, Fast Company reports.
The company has a strong focus on the renewable energy sector, and has made significant progress in developing and expanding its renewable energy portfolio in Saudi Arabia over the past five years.
