Saudi-led coalition warplanes struck targets in Yemen’s Houthi-held capital Sanaa on Thursday in retaliation for attacks in the southern port city of Aden the previous day, including at the airport which killed at least 25, according to reports.
The attacks at the Aden airport on Wednesday took place as officials in a government backed by Riyadh arrived there. At least 25 people were killed and 110 wounded in a large explosion.
Yemen’s internationally recognized government said Iran-backed Houthi rebels fired four ballistic missiles at the airport. Rebel officials did not answer phone calls from The Associated Press seeking comment, according to CBS News.
No one on the government plane was hurt.
Video published by Arab News clearly shows a missile attack on the airport.
Officials later reported another explosion close to a palace in the city where the Cabinet members were transferred following the airport attack.
The Saudi-led coalition later shot down a bomb-laden drone that attempted to target the palace, according to Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya TV.
“The desperate, terrorist attack to target Maasheq palace confirms the responsibility of the terrorist, Iran-backed Houthi militia of the attack in Aden International Airport,” a coalition statement said, according to Reuters.
The new power-sharing Yemeni government vowed on Thursday to bring stability to the war-torn country.
