“The Clean Hydrogen Economy and Saudi Arabia”: A Roadmap to Energy Leadership

Faculty and researchers from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and King Abdullah Petroleum Studies & Research Center (KAPSARC) have unveiled a new publication: “The Clean Hydrogen Economy and Saudi Arabia.”

As part of its goal to lower carbon emissions and achieve 50% of the country’s electricity come from renewable energy sources by 2030, which would require 130 gigawatts of renewable energy, Saudi Arabia continues to push forward in the hydrogen sector (which is considered renewable if it’s produced using electricity from renewable sources, like wind or solar).

“The Clean Hydrogen Economy and Saudi Arabia” analyzes both the developments in the clean hydrogen market and highlights the critical role of technology and research institutions in advancing the hydrogen economy.

On May 16, 2024, experts from KAUST and KAPSARC hosted a Clean Hydrogen Forum in KAUST to launch the book and discuss innovations in clean hydrogen research and technologies.
On the same day, the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh co-hosted with the KAPSARC the “Trade Talks: Hydrogen Horizons – Powering Today’s Energy Transition,” a program focused on hydrogen technologies. The program included speakers from the Saudi Ministry of Energy, Saudi Aramco, SABIC, Neom Green Hydrogen Co. (NGHC), ENOWA, and industry-leading companies, Air Products Qudra, Cummins, ExxonMobil, and Honeywell.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm also spoke and U.S. Ambassador Michael Ratney praised the event,
“We are pleased to support the U.S.-Saudi collaboration on the Trade Talk series, and we are excited the second iteration will focus on hydrogen technologies, which play a vital role in the sustainable energy transition. Today’s discussions showcase innovative, industry-leading firms such as Air Products Qudra, Cummins, ExxonMobil, and Honeywell, highlighting their contributions to a greener future.”
The Trade Talks series is designed in support of the 2022 U.S.-Saudi Arabia Commercial Partnership Shared Work Plan that aims to guide cooperation between the U.S. Department of Commerce and Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Commerce in four key areas: the green economy, strengthening the role of women and small medium enterprises (SMEs), promoting innovation, and increasing two-way investment. These areas were selected based on joint U.S. and Saudi goals in support of open, prosperous markets and inclusive growth.
