Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said it is “in discussions with the United States about sending troops to Syria,” according to the Washington Post, as President Trump seeks a way out for the U.S. military there.

In comments to reporters in Riyadh, Al-Jubeir said the deliberations on what type of force needs to remain in eastern Syria and where that force would come from are “ongoing.”

“We are in discussions with the U.S. and have been since the beginning of the Syrian crisis about sending forces into Syria,” he said, adding that the offer to send troops had been made previously under the Obama administration but ultimately was not accepted, according to the Post.

Al-Jubeir’s comments were made alongside U.N. chief Antonio Guterres, who met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in New York this month during the Prince’s lengthy tour of the U.S.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it “fully supports military operations against military targets in Syria” after the Trump administration launched strikes there over the weekend, calling the operation “necessary to protect civilians and stop chemical use.”
